Named for Andrew Ward (1727–1799), a Guilford native who raised and led a Connecticut regiment in the Continental Army during pivotal campaigns of the Revolutionary War. His regiment marched with Washington troops through New Jersey at the end of 1776 and into early 1777. Later served as a Brigadier General in the Connecticut militia.
After the war ended, Ward returned to Guilford, where he became active in civic life and lived until his death in 1799.
